Reflection…

The Future Is Now

The number seven is prominent in today’s Scripture readings.  It and other numbers such as 3, 10, 12, 40 and 50 also appear in the Bible many times.  As they are used in Scripture, they have a special meaning beyond just a head count.  On the seventh day of creation, Genesis tells us God rested, the work was done, the wheel had come full circle, the cycle was complete.  Thus seven indicated completion.  Jewish law used to say they had to forgive seven times, understanding seven as a number, but Jesus says we have to forgive seven times seventy or until it is complete.  The woman that was married seven times in today’s gospel couldn’t be any more married than she was.  Many of the Biblical numbers carry additional meanings, as does the number 13 in many countries.

A major problem for the Jewish people was dealing with the problem of evil.  How come evil people seem to prosper and good people seem to suffer?  When will payback come for evil people?  At the time of Jesus, most Jewish people did not believe in an after life.  Consequently the idea of reward or punishment, heaven or hell, did not have any meaning for their lives.  Today’s Gospel shows the Sadducees trying to make Jesus look foolish with the story of the seven brothers who married the woman, and who will be her husband in the next life.  Jesus sidesteps their question and puts the dialogue into a whole new level.

The people who did not believe in resurrection saw success, family, wealth and health in this life as part of the reward for living a good life, and sickness and suffering in this life as punishment for sin.  The great H.G. Wells used

to insist that an eternity of H.G. Wells would be intolerable.  How do you and I feel about an eternity of self?  For me it’s an eternity of God in which we share and I can’t think of anything better.

I do believe the reality of resurrection is an ongoing transformation of life.  For me death is not an end, it is a transformation to a higher form of life.  The commitment to resurrection is a choice, and it is a choice for today.  Resurrection starts today and the transformation impacts all our relationships.  There used to be a quote about the seventh son of a seventh son, but as we all are children of God on our way to our Father’s house, the only number that counts is to be on the inside.

Resurrection is a go for me, and I’d rather be there than miss it.  If now is not the future you want, time is running out to change it.  Hope you’re with me!

Advent Day of Reflection

Finding Room for the Christ Child

“There was no room for the birth of the Christ Child that first Christmas, but how are you doing with making room for Him this Christmas?  There are ways to make space by keeping the traditional spirit of Advent and Christmas alive even in today’s busy world.  Join us to learn more about this as we learn how religious and spiritual traditions point the way while the application of modern psychology can help us to get there.”
